Respectful household cleanout with a homeowner reviewing an album

Protect the things that cannot leave

Start with documents, medication, money, keys, jewelry, photographs, and small valuables. Move them to a locked room, vehicle, or clearly protected area before hauling begins.

Do not rely on a small note placed on one item. Make the keep zone physically separate from the removal route.

Work in a fixed order

Finish one room or category before opening another. A practical order is personal records, keep items, donation candidates, ordinary haul-away, then materials needing special disposal.

Choose one person to make final decisions. Competing instructions slow the job and increase the chance of a mistake.

Pull out hazardous and regulated material

Set aside paint, solvents, pesticides, automotive fluids, compressed cylinders, loose batteries, and unknown chemicals. EPA recommends community household-hazardous-waste programs rather than pouring these products down drains, onto the ground, or into storm sewers.

Ask the local waste authority about current collection options. Do not hide questionable containers inside boxes or bags.
