Make the property safe first
Stay away from downed or low electrical lines and anything touching them. Do not cut, drag, or pile material near utility boxes, poles, meters, hydrants, or roadways.
Follow current instructions from local emergency management and utilities. A private hauling crew cannot make an unsafe electrical or structural area ready for entry.
Separate by material
FEMA debris guidance separates vegetative debris, construction debris, large appliances, electronics, and hazardous waste. Mixed piles can slow removal because each category may require different handling.
Keep refrigerators and other appliances upright and secure doors. Leave chemical containers closed and in their original packaging when possible.
Document before removal
Photograph damaged areas and important items before cleanup when an insurance claim may be involved. Save receipts and follow your insurer’s instructions.
For routine yard debris, trim only what can be handled safely. Trees under tension, unstable limbs, and damaged structures call for the appropriate specialist.
