Worker measuring a hallway before moving a dresser

Empty it completely

Clear drawers, shelves, sleeper-sofa compartments, and cabinet contents. Loose objects add weight, shift during movement, and can damage the item or the room.

Set aside keys, hardware, and anything you want to keep. If the piece must be disassembled, ask whether the crew handles that step before removing screws yourself.

Measure the tightest point

Measure the furniture at its widest, tallest, and deepest points. Then check the narrowest door, hallway, stair turn, or elevator opening on the route.

A doorway may be wide enough while the turn immediately beyond it is not. Photos of both sides of a tight corner are often more useful than one straight-on picture.

Clear and protect the path

Move lamps, frames, rugs, plants, pet gates, and breakable decor. Keep children and pets away from the route during the pickup.

Tell the crew about exterior steps, loose railings, soft ground, parking restrictions, or building move rules. Those details can change the equipment and time needed.
